How To: Find crash-logs for an iPhone app

If your have an application that is crashing then the developers may/should ask you to send him the crash log so they can attempt to diagnose the problem. This logfile contains information about what the application was doing before it crashed.

These log files are stored on your computer, and are copied across everytime you sync your iPhone. To find the log files do the following;

1) Sync your iPhone

2) Browse to the following folders. Note that YOUR_DEVICE will be the name if your iPhone as shown in iTunes.

Mac OS X : /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/YOUR_DEVICE/

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\YOUR_DEVICE\

Windows Vista: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\YOUR_DEVICE\

3) Each log file will begin with the name of the application. Create a zip file from these applications (Mac: Right-click->Compress, Windows Right-Click->WinZip) and then email it to the developer

How To: iPhone/iPad Ad Hoc Distribution

I often need to send Ad Hoc distribution builds to customers, so that they can see the app progress. Unfortunately Apple made this process quite complicated. Here's a how to from the view of a customer:

1. Find your iPhone Device ID (UDID)
Every iPhone has a unique device id and to install an Ad Hoc build you need to first send this ID to the developer. You find your device id in iTunes (when your device is connected):

iTunes serial number

iTunes udid number

iTunes copy udid number

2. Install the Ad Hoc build
Once you got the Ad Hoc build from the developer you need to drag & drop the *.app and the *.mobileprovision file into the iTunes Mediathek. This should work on both Mac & Windows.

iTunes ad hoc installation

3. Sync your iPhone/iPad now
If you get any error message then please note the error code and send it back to the developer.

4. Done
You should now find the app on your device !

We are the most focused company that I know of or have read of or have any knowledge of. We say no to good ideas every day. We say no to great ideas in order to keep the amount of things we focus on very small in number so that we can put enormous energy behind the ones we do choose. The table each of you are sitting at today, you could probably put every product on it that Apple makes, yet Apple’s revenue last year was $40 billion. I think any other company that could say that is an oil company. Link

Apple raises 3G download limit for iPhone apps from 10 to 20 MB

This seems like a small change, but for some apps this is big. One example is our iTranslate app.

On of our major goals for iTranslate is to keep the app footprint as small as possible. We have so many daily downloads that it's unthinkable for us to go over the 10 MB limit.

For the Text-To-Speech feature in iTranslate we had to implement a rather bloated client side library. Of course we could have done everything with server APIs, but we think this does not make for a good user experience.

To keep the app footprint small, we decided to implement the core TTS library in the app and download the files for the voices only after a user buys a voice (one voice has about 35 MB).

After a lot of optimizing we ended up with 9.1 MB app size. Acutally it's 4.5 MB, but Apple blows up our app size to 9.1 MB with their DRM.

The problem is that we needed to make some compromises. For example we decided to not support the Chinese TTS voice.

With the new 20 MB limit, we have more than enough additional bytes to implement some cool new features.
